Our Story
Hi, I’m Jo!
I’m the founder and director of Luminaire Academy, a non-profit outdoor micro-school. From a young age, I have been passionate about working with children of all ages. This passion led me to pursue studies at Emporia State University, where I majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Child Psychology. However, life had other plans, and my path shifted toward entrepreneurship, where I’ve spent years running business operations.
But that’s not the heart of why Luminaire Academy was founded.
In 2021, I became a mother to a beautiful son who was later diagnosed with a disability requiring ongoing therapy throughout his childhood—and possibly beyond. As a mother, my instinct was to do everything in my power to provide him with the best resources and support. I researched tirelessly to ensure he could enjoy a well-rounded childhood while receiving the specialized care he needed.
While we found excellent therapy resources for his early years, a new concern arose: Where would he go to school when it was time for elementary education? The schools in our area were supportive and generous with resources, but the reality became clear—our education system is overwhelmed. Many schools lack the funding and staffing necessary to meet the growing demand for specialized therapists, leaving countless children without the support they need to thrive.
This realization broke my heart, but it also ignited a passion in me.
I’ve always been fascinated by how children learn and absorb information. Through extensive research, I discovered that children engage more deeply and learn more effectively in outdoor environments where all five senses are activated. This setting allows them to explore, think critically, and build the tools they need to flourish in a constantly evolving world.
I also wanted my son—and all children—to have the freedom to be children: to run, play, explore, and learn through hands-on experiences. I envisioned an education rooted in curiosity and creativity, far removed from the constraints of traditional classrooms.
As I met other families, I realized our struggles weren’t unique. So many parents faced the same challenges—limited resources, a lack of therapeutic support, and a desire for an education that encouraged their children to thrive holistically. That’s when I knew something had to change.
I founded Luminaire Academy as a way to take control of our children’s futures. Our mission is to create a nurturing, inclusive environment where children can grow, learn, and experience the benefits of outdoor education while receiving the resources they need to succeed. This school isn’t just for my son; it’s for the countless families who share our vision for a better way of learning and living.
At Luminaire Academy, we’re building a brighter future—one child, one family, and one community at a time.

Greenhouse Classroom Setting for Science Lessons during harsh weather conditions
We’re currently working with Learning Landscapes out of Portland to design a nature based playscape to deliver our students a lovely combination of inclusion, nature, landform, challenge and sensory engagement.
Our A-frame will contain the kitchen, bathroom, a study room/open space and 2 bedrooms that will be utilized as our Tech room and Math room. These classrooms will only be utilized during harsh temperature days and when the lessons require them.
Our recreational building will be built with many sustainable/eco friendly technologies. This building will be utilized during harsh weather days to help your child get the exercise he/she needs on a daily basis.
